Licensed US au pair agencies
If you are planning to become an au pair in America (USA) or you are an American family looking for an au pair, please be aware legally an au pair must have a J1 visa.
The only way for an au pair to get this, is to go through one of the 6 federally designated au pair agencies or one of its partner organisations in the respective country.
It is not possible to become an au pair if there is no partner organisation in the country of the young person who wants to become an au pair in the USA.
The au pair can enter the United States on a tourist visa, but nobody is allowed to work in America while being there as a tourist.
List of federally designated agencies
At the US Department of State, there's an au pair brochure available online. It contains questions and answers that may be of interest.
The families have to pay the agencies between 4.000 and 5.500 US$ fees upfront besides the au pair's weekly pocket money.
